Pencils are one of the most common types of pens, especially for kids and painters. It is a kind of pen used for writing and drawing. It has a history of more than 400 years since its invention.

In 1662, the world's first pencil factory was built in Nuremberg, Germany. French chemist Auguste Comte made a solid and wear-resistant refill after trial and error. An American carpenter made the world's first pencil shaft.

In today's drawing tutorial, we are going to learn to draw a cartoon pencil. Not only does he have a happy expression, but he also has a slender arm on either side of his body. He's a little cutie isn't he?

How to Draw a Pencil Step by Step

Step 1 Draw the eraser of this pencil

Some pencils have an eraser on the end, like the pencil we're going to draw today.

Draw a rectangle first, but don't draw its top edge. Then draw a horizontal line above this rectangle. Its length should be shorter than the bottom edge of the rectangle.

Starting from the left end of this horizontal line, draw a curved line connecting the top of the left edge of the rectangle. The same goes for the right end of this horizontal line.

This way we get a left-right symmetrical eraser.

Step 2 Draw the metal sleeve of this pencil

On a pencil, a metal sleeve holds the eraser and the end of the pencil together.

Draw a rectangle at the bottom of the eraser. It's the same width as the eraser, but slightly longer.

Inside this rectangle draw two slender rectangles, the one above is slightly larger. This completes the drawing of the metal sleeve.

Step 3 Draw the left edge of this pencil

Extend the left edge of the eraser down and draw a long vertical line. It's about 4-5 times as long as the left edge of the eraser.

Next we need to draw an inconspicuous guide line first. Find the midpoint of the top and bottom edges of the eraser, connect them and extend the line down to get a guideline.

Take a point on this guideline. Then connect it to the bottom end of the left edge of this pencil.

Step 4 Draw the right edge of this pencil

Draw the right edge of this pencil in a similar way. First draw the long vertical line and connect its end to the point on the guideline.

This way we get the outline of this pencil. It is left-right symmetrical.

Next we will make details to it and add some cartoon elements.

Step 5 Draw the arms of this pencil

Draw a glove-like shape on the left side of the metal sleeve for one hand of this pencil.

You don't need to follow the picture above exactly to draw the hand. It can be higher or lower, more left or right, allowing for different poses.

Starting at the bottom of this hand, draw a line down and to the right to the left edge of this pencil.

Draw the other arm of this pencil in a similar way. The two arms may or may not be symmetrical.

Step 6 Draw this pencil's face

Below the metal sleeve, draw a small vertical oval near the left edge of the pencil for one of the pencil's eyes.

Draw another eye near the right edge of this pencil. This eye is slightly taller than the one on the left. They are the same distance from the edges of the pencil.

Draw a short diagonal line above each eye to get this pencil's eyebrows. Draw a short line just below the middle of the two eyes for the nose of this pencil.

Then draw a sloping oval under each eye to get the cheeks. The oval on the left slopes to the left and the one on the right slopes to the right. They are all bigger than eyes.

Step 7 Draw the mouth and body of this pencil

Under the nose, draw a curved line from left to right. Draw a left-to-right curve below to connect the two ends of the previous curve.

This gets the mouth of this pencil. He is smiling happily. You can change the mood of this pencil by adjusting the shape of the mouth.

Draw two long vertical lines under the mouth, paying attention to where their bottom ends are. The distance between them, and their respective distances from the left and right edges of the pencil, are the same.

Step 8 Draw the tip of this pencil

Starting from the bottom end of the left edge of this pencil, draw a zigzag line to the right connecting the bottom end of the right edge of this pencil.

This zigzag line is going to pass through the bottoms of the two vertical lines we drew in the previous step.

Then draw a horizontal line below this zigzag line. It's in the middle of this tip.

Step 9 Color this cartoon pencil

This is a cute cartoon pencil, we chose bright colors to color it. The eraser is red, the metal sleeve and hands are gray, the pencil is yellow, the tip is brown and black, and the cheeks are orange. If you have any better ideas, please implement them.
