In 1902, in the wilderness of Montana, USA, an expedition team discovered a group of carnivorous dinosaur fossils. Although the skeleton was far from complete, it was enough to convince them that it was some kind of monstrously large carnivorous dinosaur!
It took the expedition team three years to dig out these fossils, transported them to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and named it "Tyrannosaurus rex", or T-rex for short.
Tyrannosaurus rex, an unprecedented "big monster", soon became the big boss in various novels, comics and movies, and became a household name in the United States. The most famous is the 1933 "King Kong" where Tyrannosaurus rex fought King Kong.
How to Draw a Tyrannosaurus Rex Step by Step
Step 1 Draw the head of this Tyrannosaurus rex
First of all, we need to draw the outline of the head of this Tyrannosaurus rex, and draw its mouth and teeth at the same time.
First draw a "<" shape as the mouth of the Tyrannosaurus rex. Then draw an oval outline for the head.
You need to notice that the chin of this Tyrannosaurus rex is made up of two straight lines. This makes this Tyrannosaurus rex look like the bite force is very scary!
Let's look at the mouth of this Tyrannosaurus rex again. Draw six triangles inside the mouth for sharp teeth.
Step 2 Draw one eye of this Tyrannosaurus rex
Draw a straight line across the face from left to right, the line is lower on the left and higher on the right. Then draw a circle at the bottom of it for one of the T-Rex's eyes.
Inside the eye, a little to the right of the center, draw a curved line from top to bottom to complete the eye.
You can try changing the curve in this eye to make this T-Rex look in different directions or express different emotions.
Besides that, we're going to add some markings to the T-Rex's face to make it look even scarier.
Step 3 Draw one forelimb of this Tyrannosaurus rex
The T-Rex we drew here is in a cartoon style, so don't be surprised that its neck is just a line!
At the bottom of the head, near the left end, draw a straight line to the bottom left. This is the neck of this Tyrannosaurus Rex!
Draw a straight line from the bottom end of this line to the upper right. Then draw a straight line to the lower right. This gives you two forelimbs.
At the end of the upper forelimb, we're going to draw a hand. It has only three fingers with sharp claws.
Step 4 Draw the other forelimb of this tyrannosaurus
Next we will also draw a hand on the lower forelimb. It looks close to the one we drew in the previous step.
The shape of this hand is a bit like a heart. Start by drawing a heart shape rotated 90 degrees to the right. Leave a small gap in the middle on the right side of it.
In this gap draw a "U" shape rotated 90 degrees to the left. This hand also has three fingers.
Draw a sharp claw on each finger. They all face to the right. The forelimbs of this Tyrannosaurus rex are complete.
Step 5 Draw the body and tail of this T-rex
The body of this dinosaur is approximately trapezoidal, although it is actually pentagonal. It's about the size of a head.
Draw a long straight line from left to right to connect the bottom of the neck. This line is low on the left and high on the right. This is the back of this Tyrannosaurus rex.
Draw a straight line from the left end of this line down to the left. From the bottom of this newly obtained line, draw a straight line parallel to the back to the right as the abdomen.
Draw a short line from the bottom of the neck towards the lower right. Then draw a line from the bottom of this short line to the lower left to connect the abdomen.
After drawing the body of this tyrannosaurus rex, draw an upward-rising tail on the left side of the body.
Step 6 Add spines to the back
Do you think this Tyrannosaurus rex is too cartoony? In this step we're going to try to make it more majestic and scary!
Add some triangles on top of this T-Rex's head. Then add triangles on its neck, back and tail as well.
You can think of this step as drawing a long polyline. This adds a lot of spines to this Tyrannosaurus rex.
Alright, let's go ahead and add the legs and body markings to this T-Rex.
Step 7 Draw two legs of this Tyrannosaurus rex
Take a point at the bottom of the body, near the left end. From this point draw a straight line to the lower right. Then draw a slightly longer straight line from the bottom end of this line to the lower left. In this way you get a leg.
Draw a horizontal oval at the bottom of this leg for the foot. Then draw two triangles on the right side of this oval for the sharp claws.
In a similar way, draw a front leg to the right of the already drawn leg. The position of its foot is slightly lower.
Here we have only drawn two legs. If you want to draw all the legs, feel free to experiment and see which option works better.
Step 8 Add markings to the body
At this point we are almost done with this cute T-Rex. But we want it to look more textured and powerful.
That's easy to fix. We can add some circles as markings on its body and tail. You can also choose the kind of markings on this dinosaur's face.
After drawing the T-Rex, you may want to add a background. Believe me, this will make the drawing more vivid!
Tyrannosaurus rex lived at the end of the Cretaceous period about 66 million years ago. You can look up the relevant information yourself and design a suitable environment for this T-Rex. This should be fun!
Step 9 Color this cartoon Tyrannosaurus rex
The last thing is to color this cartoon T-Rex. This is the most exciting time, and your color choices can have a big impact on how the drawing will end up.
Here we are going to color the body of this t-rex green. Then color the stripes a dark green. Color the spines yellow.
When you finish this T-Rex drawing, don't forget to share it with Mom, Dad, and the rest of the family. It's a surprise for them and sure to make you proud.
