The hula hoop was born in 1958. It's one of the truly world-famous toys of all time, made by two young toymakers in San Gabriel, California, Richard Nell and Arthur Merlin.

At a Toy Fair in New York, they learned that there was a big wooden ring that was going all over Australia. So they also tried to use wood to make wooden rings at first.

But they really don't like wood, so they want to try plastic. Later, they made 3-foot-diameter rings with colorful polyethylene pipes. This new toy is the hula hoop.
