Every year, Venice holds a grand carnival, which lasts for about two weeks. It is said that this originated from a festival in ancient Europe, and it is one of the oldest and largest carnivals in the world today.
As the most famous carnival on earth, the biggest feature of the Venice Carnival is the colorful and unique masks. That's why Venice is also known as the "City of Masks".
During the carnival, people wear colorful masks, cloaks, and gorgeous costumes. Under the masks, there is no difference between gender, age, rich or poor. All show themselves to the fullest and enjoy the fun of the carnival.
How to Draw a Mardi Gras Mask Step by Step
Step 1 Draw the top edge of the left half of this mask
This mask is like a pair of beautiful wings, and we are going to draw some feather-like effects on top of it.
First determine a point on the upper left of the paper. Draw a curved line downward from this point. This is a short line.
Still starting from that point, draw a long curved line toward the bottom right. This creates a feather-like shape.
Step 2 Draw the top edge of the right half of this mask
We first identified a point in the previous step. Now find a point of symmetry to the right of it.
Again, draw a short curved line down from this point. Then draw a long curved line from this point to the bottom left.
The ends of the two long curved lines are joined together to give a symmetrical shape.
Step 3 Outline the left half of this mask
We identified a point in the first step. Now find another point to the left of it. Its position is slightly higher.
From this point draw a curved line to the bottom right to connect the bottom end of the first curved line we drew in the first step. Then draw a curved line downward from this point.
In a similar way, find another point on the left, and then draw a short and a long curve towards the lower right.
Step 4 Outline the right half of this mask
Next, we're going to outline the right half of this mask. You will find that the drawing way is basically the same as the previous step.
Also determine a point on the right, draw two curved lines to get a feather-like shape.
Determine another point, and draw two curves from this point to the bottom left. This completes the outline of the symmetrical mask.
Step 5 Draw the pattern on the left half of the mask
On the left half of the mask, we're going to paint a nice pattern around the left eye. This is an important part of this mask!
Start by drawing a shape that resembles an earbud connected by a data cable. The upper part of this "data cable" is thicker.
Then, to the right of the upper "earbud," add two other shapes similar to it.
Step 6 Draw the pattern on the right half of the mask
As we already know, this is a symmetrical mask. So we will also draw a pattern around the eye on the right half of the mask.
Follow the way similar to the previous step to draw a symmetrical and beautiful pattern. At this time, the mask is already taking shape!
This is an important step, which is related to the final effect of the mask. So don't rush, finish it patiently and carefully!
Step 7 Add details to this mardi gras mask
On this mask we will also add some decorations to make it more ornate. Don't worry, it's easy to do!
On this mask, refer to the illustration above, and add some circles of different sizes.
You need to notice that the circles get progressively smaller from top to bottom and from the inside to the outside.
Step 8 Draw the eyes on this mardi gras mask
Now that we've drawn the decoration around the eyes, it's time to draw the holes for the eyes!
Draw two curved lines on the left side of this mask to get an olive shape. Do the same on the right side of the mask.
Then near the bottom of this mask, add six quads on the mask. They are located on the left and right parts of the mask respectively, and are symmetrical.
Step 9 Color this mardi gras mask
Finally get out your crayons or watercolors and carefully color in this gorgeous and mysterious mask.
You can choose any colors you like. Warm or cool colors, different shades of colors, etc. can fit different styles.
You can even draw your own or a family member's face on the back of this mask if you're interested!
