How to Draw a Whale

You may not know that although whales live in the sea and look like fish, they are actually mammals! Similar to it, dolphins are mammals too, and both dolphins and whales are cetaceans.

Whales are the largest mammals known to man. The Latin name of the whale is derived from the Greek word for "sea monster", which shows the awe of the ancients for these behemoths that inhabit the ocean.

How to Draw a Whale Step by Step

Step 1 Outline the head and draw the back of the whale

Start by drawing an oval that slopes to the right. You need to draw it bigger without drawing its right and bottom edges.

This may be difficult for you, but you can ask for help. For example, find an oval object to trace along the edge. If you can't find it you can consider printing an egg and cutting it out for use.

The resulting shape, the left part is the outline of the head, and the line on the right of the head is the back of the whale.

Step 2 Draw the tail of this whale

Let's draw this whale's tail first, and then use two lines to connect the body to the tail.

On the right of this whale's back, draw a tail that slopes to the right. It looks like the outline of a cat's head with two ears.

Leave a gap at the bottom of this tail. Starting at the right end of the back, draw a curved line to the gap of this tail. Then draw another line below.

Step 3 Draw the water spray of this whale

Whales breathe with their lungs and need to surface frequently for ventilation. As it exhales, the moisture in the air condenses, creating the familiar fountain shape.

Draw a small oval at the bottom of this "fountain" for this whale's fumarole.

Did you know that experts can even identify whale species from the height, width and angle of the spray!

Step 4 Draw one eye of the whale

On the whale's face, draw a circle a little down the middle to get the outline of an eye.

Draw a curved line from left to right on this eye. The line is high on the left and low on the right, and extends beyond the circle at both ends.

Draw a semicircle at the bottom of this curve and color it black. This completes the drawing of a big eye for the whale.

Step 5 Draw this whale's mouth

Start at the bottom of this whale's head outline and draw a smooth curve to the right and then up. Its right end is almost at the same level as the curve on the eye.

Start at the bottom of the whale's head outline and draw a smooth curve down and then to the lower right to get the whale's chin.

In this way, we have drawn the big mouth of this whale. It looks like it's smiling, isn't it cute?

Step 6 Draw the sea

Draw a wavy line to the left of this whale's mouth.

Then draw a wavy line to the right of this whale's tail.

Draw another wavy line at the bottom of this whale's body.

Step 7 Add wavy lines

Below this whale, draw two more wavy lines. This is how to draw the sea.

By drawing the sea in this way, you can get the effect of depth of field.

Step 8 Draw the sun

Draw an incomplete circle for the sun in the upper left corner of the drawing. Of course, you can also draw a full circle.

Then along the edge of the sun, draw three radial lines outside it.

Step 9 Color this cartoon whale

Here, different shades of blue were chosen to color the whale. If you are not satisfied, you can try other colors.

I want to mention here that the reproductive capacity of whales is very poor, and it takes an average of two years to give birth to a baby. Due to human hunting and environmental pollution, the number of whales has been drastically reduced, and only less than 5,000 remain.

Whales have lived on Earth for more than 50 million years, and many species are now on the brink of extinction!
